Michael Jackson Lives On In 'Immortal' Tour

Cirque du Soleil show pays tribute to late icon with world tour.
By Uptin Saiidi

<P><B>NEWARK, New Jersey</B> &#8212; Music, dance and acrobatics combine in celebration of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s iconic life in the "Immortal" World Tour. From trapeze artists to acrobats and even a world-champion pole dancer, guests at the Cirque du Soleil show can expect a high-energy tribute to the legend. </P><P> </P><P>The tour stopped for two nights in Newark, New Jersey, this past weekend (its 40th stop) and will open Tuesday night (April 3) at New York's Madison Square Garden, where it will remain through Thursday. From there, it will continue across North America through the summer before heading to Europe in the fall. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:755805/cp~vid%3D755805%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A755805" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>Having already produced the <a href="http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/love/default.aspx" target="_blank">Beatles "Love" show</a> in Las Vegas, Cirque is no stranger to musical tributes. </P><P> </P><P>"Immortal" serves as a sensory explosion that starts on the subdued side and progresses in both spectacle and energy. More than 60 artists perform to 32 songs in a presentation that feels much like a concert with an ensemble of circus-inspired acts elegantly melding together. The stage is two levels with a long peninsula extending into the audience, where the majority of the acrobatics takes place. MJ's famed choreographic style was present in nearly all the numbers, and the audacious task of the performers was well-received by the audience. </P><P> </P><P>The progression of the musical numbers moved seamlessly. The energy kicked into high gear with Jackson-like characters performing "Fanatics Medley" as Jackson 5 &#8212; one of them in MJ's signature fedora and another as a gold-suited mime. Jackson's youth was remembered in "Childhood" during which a recording of Jackson's voice referred to his early stardom as he sang, "Have you seen my childhood?/ It's been my fate to compensate/ For the childhood I've never known." </P><P> </P><P>While the moving screens, elaborate stage designs and detailed costumes were impressive, one of the most awe-inspiring moments was witnessing what the human body is capable of during the pole-dancing number. Felix Cane, a two-time world pole-dancing champion, maneuvered in the sky dancing on a pole &#8212; with no harness &#8212; appropriately performing to "Dangerous," as the audience was captivated by her every move. </P><P> </P><P>Another highlight was "Human Nature," during which the back screens were dominated by Neverland graphics and an image of a young Michael sitting on the moon. In front of the backdrop, a half-dozen artists wrapped in multicolored LED costumes soared through the air in sync, representing the constellations. </P><P> </P><P>"Beat It" got the crowd moving while they watched performers in MJ's signature accessories, including his famous glove and penny loafers, dance in dynamic movement. A rock-infused duel between an electric guitar and electric cello capped the song. </P><P> </P><P>After an elaborate performance to "Black or White," as the night seemed to be over and the audience slowly started spilling into the aisles, the lights illuminated one last time for an encore to "Man in the Mirror." The artists appeared to take a bow in front of exploding fireworks. </P><P> </P><P><i>Have you seen "Immortal"? Share your review below!</i></p>

Will Nicki Minaj Come Back To Twitter?

Her Barbz sure hope so, but Nicki bid them 'good f---ing bye' on Sunday.
By Kara Klenk

On Sunday, more than 11 million Barbz had their lifeline to Nicki Minaj abruptly severed when the femcee shut down her Twitter account.

Tensions initially escalated over Minaj's accusation that a fan site had leaked some of her tracks and culminated in the rapper's deactivation of her account. This move came as a shock to many of her fans, as Minaj was one of the most followed Twitter users in the world (she had more followers than Oprah!) and constantly filled her timeline with personalized responses to individual fans. It seems that maintaining such an open dialogue with her fans may have backfired as she formulated her last frustrated tweets including, "Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f---ing bye."

While having a Twitter following in the millions certainly comes with perks, the negative comments undoubtedly wear on stars. Chris Brown has deleted his account and his tweets on more than one occasion, after getting fed up with comments from other users about his personal life. Brown and Minaj aren't alone: John Mayer, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have all been Twitter quitters at one point too.

Celebs ditch Twitter for a variety of reasons — after a scandal, over backlash from ill-thought-out comments, or sometimes just to focus on their career and not get caught up in the constant flow of communication the social-networking site thrives on. But it seems just as difficult to stay away. Brown, Lovato and Cyrus have all since returned to the site, while Mayer currently has a working account with zero tweets logged.

But how long does Minaj have to decide about coming back to her millions of Barbz? According to a source at Twitter, after a period of inactivity (several months of not logging in), a deactivated handle can be reassigned to another user. However, before anyone thinks they can snap up the @nickiminaj handle in a few months, with a verified celebrity account, Twitter works with the user before any action is taken. So whether Minaj ever returns, no one should count on grabbing that user name anytime soon. Plus, if she does have a change of heart, her following will remain intact, so the Barbz would be the first to know about a comeback.

Are you hoping Nicki comes back to Twitter? Let us know in the comments!

'Harry Potter' Encyclopedia In The Works

J.K. Rowling announces she will donate all royalties to charity.

Last week, fans of J.K. Rowling were treated to the title and release date of the "Harry Potter" author's new novel, "The Casual Vacancy." This week is sure to have fans buzzing again as it brings the news that she's started working on a "Harry Potter" encyclopedia.

Rowling answered a fan question regarding the highly anticipated Potter lexicon on the "frequently asked questions and rumours" page of her website.

"For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry's world, and I have started work on this now — some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity."

Back in 2008, Rowling and Warner Brothers won a lawsuit against Steve Vander Ark, the publisher of the Harry Potter Lexicon, who attempted to release a book along the same lines.

Rowling also addressed the biggest burning fan question of all on her website: Will there ever be another "Harry Potter" novel?

"I have always refused to say 'never' to this question," the British author wrote, "because I think it would be foolish to rule out something I might want to do in a few years' time. However, I have no immediate plans to write another Harry Potter novel, and I do think that I have rounded off Harry's story in seven published books."

With the sheer volume of a project like the Harry Potter encyclopedia, it's unlikely it will be available anytime soon. But Rowling's first adult novel, "The Casual Vacancy," is set to be released on September 27, 2012. The novel follows a quaint town in the wake of a death that leaves an empty seat on the parish council. Despite appearances, the town isn't all it seems. Behind closed doors it's in a continual state of war and this sudden death leaves it in its biggest war yet.

Should J.K. Rowling write another "Harry Potter" book? Leave your comment below!?

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie Uniting Onscreen Too?

Have you heard the news, movie fans? Seven years after meeting on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are engaged! No, for real this time. Cynthia Pett-Dante, Pitt's manager, confirmed the news on Friday (April 13), saying, "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy."

Robert Procop, the designer of Jolie's engagement ring, released a statement to People: "Brad had a specific vision for this ring, which he realized over a yearlong collaboration with Robert. He wanted every aspect of it to be perfect, so Robert was able to locate a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina's hand."

We can hear all the ladies in our office swooning, but that's not the only exciting news for fans of the Hollywood power couple. Pitt and Jolie may star together alongside Michael Fassbender in the forthcoming movie "The Counselor."

Deadline Hollywood reports that director Ridley Scott wanted Pitt and Javier Bardem for the movie. As he's close to getting them both, rumors are circulating that Jolie might also be in talks to play the female lead. She and Scott have been collaborating on a Gertrude Bell biopic, which may have led to the rumors. With Brangelina's engagement now official, it would make sense that the actors would want to remain close to one another.

But Pitt and Jolie wouldn't be the only ones to reunite via "The Counselor." This would be the first time Scott and Pitt work together since Scott directed "Thelma & Louise," a film that undoubtedly launched Pitt's career.

"The Counselor" was written by Cormac McCarthy. It follows a well-respected lawyer (Fassbender) who gets involved in the drug business and quickly finds himself in a situation that's more than he can handle. If cast in the film, Pitt would play a shady middleman and Bardem would be Fassbender's associate. The movie is said to start filming in June and Fox is currently negotiating to distribute.

Shock Over 'Hunger Games' Directorgate: New Captain Needed Fast!

Which Hollywood heavy-hitter will step in to take helm of 'Catching Fire'?
By Jason Kaufman

The big "Hunger Games" news this week wasn't how much cash continued to pour in, but the director who was on his way out. Gary Ross released a statement saying he would not be back for the sequel.

"Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct 'Catching Fire,' " Ross said. "As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making 'The Hunger Games' — it was the happiest experience of my professional life."

"Hunger Games" studio Lionsgate expressed remorse at Ross' departure. "We're very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct 'Catching Fire.' We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work."

MTV Movies Managing Editor Eric Ditzian thought something was up. "I am frankly surprised he's not coming back, but in retrospect, I could see the implication when he was speaking to us, he was very reluctant to talk about 'Catching Fire,' " Ditzian told the panel on the latest edition of MTV News' "Talk Nerdy."

"Nerdy" host Josh Wigler expressed the need for urgency on the part of Lionsgate to make their hire soon. "Whoever they get to direct 'Fire' needs to have started yesterday. They really need to make this hire pretty fast; production is moving in August."

Who will step in for Ross? On Ditzian's wish list: Darren Aronofsky. "Great with the hand-held camera, great with these intimate first-person narratives. But it's not going to happen. He's busy."

Ditzian's pick for the auteur to drive Katniss' next chapter is Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who's no stranger to hand-held cameras himself and has proved time and time again, from "Trainspotting" to "127 Hours," that he's a master of first-person tales as well.

The MTV Movies staff also predicts the short list of directors will include Steven Soderbergh, John Hillcoat and J.J. Abrams.

Best Picks for the "Catching Fire" Director Job

"The movie can survive," Ditzian said.
